Quality leather, an important distinction, is durable, comes in a variety of styles, colours and strengths. Leather remains popular and highly desired - choose correctly and this leather piece will provide maximum comfort and will improve with age, so you’ll continue to enjoy it for years to come.
Let’s talk about types of leathers and their different uses. Here’s some Leather 101 from Palliser:
NATURAL (FULL) LEATHER GRAIN The top of the top-grain selection is uncorrected or natural, full grain leather. These premium hides are the real deal – fully authentic because they retain all the natural textures and markings of the cowhide, with no imperfections changed or corrected. Only five percent of all upholstery hides rank in this elite status.
Full grain leathers are coloured with clear (aniline) or semi-clear (semi-aniline) dyes to highlight, rather than cover, their natural grain and markings. But with little or no opaque pigment in these dyes, each individual cell on the hide will absorb colour in its own way. Similar to the colour variation that occurs when a wood grain is stained, full grained leathers are fully unique, emphasizing leather’s natural, one-of-a-kind quality.
Most top grain leather is partly or fully corrected. These hides retain the quality, thickness, strength and supple feel of their top grain, but arrive at tanneries with too many unwanted blemishes. Some hides are gently buffed to even out the grain; others are sanded to remove unwanted markings and then embossed with a uniform grain pattern.
Many levels of corrected leathers exist, from slightly to heavily altered, depending on the original condition of the hide. Partly corrected hides look and feel more natural than fully corrected hides. And like full grain leather, their more natural graining, which is often not uniform in appearance, can make them costlier.
Partly corrected hides can be coloured with semi-clear (semi-aniline) dyes. But fully corrected hides are dyed with opaque pigments to help cover any unwanted natural markings.
Split leather is always fully corrected and dyed with opaque pigments. As the bottom layer of a hide that’s been spliced, split leathers lack the natural graining of top grain leather, so they benefit from grain embossing and solid colour pigments. Split leathers are usually applied to the outside arms and back of leather furniture as a complement to top grain leathers which are located on the seats, inside backs and arms – basically everywhere your body touches.
Leather correction doesn’t affect leather’s durability in any way. Though natural grains are altered for greater uniformity, corrected leathers are extremely durable and can be more suitable to active lifestyles than uncorrected, full grain leathers.
Things to think about:
Dust doesn’t get absorbed (no dust mites); a lightly dampened cloth will easily keep your furniture dust-free.
Nice to have: zipper seat cushions and backs, for easy refilling, if required after many years of wear and tear.
Leather adjusts to your body temperature in less than 15 seconds, “cold leather” is a true misconception.
Keep in mind your lifestyle to properly determine which leather type to buy – a busier, heavily used room will do better with a little heavier finish and protected leather.
When comparing the price of fabric verses leather, keep in mind that a leather piece of furniture will likely last three to four times longer than a fabric sofa.
Always be sure you are getting leather and not a ‘faux’ leather - which is really a fabric (bonded leather is not leather).
THINKING ABOUT BUYING A SOFA OR SECTIONAL?
I make a lot of purchases online, but a sofa, sectional, sofa bed or home theatre? I don’t understand how you can buy seating without lounging, reclining and throwing your legs up to see exactly how it feels! Our body types are so different! (Ever try buying a pair of new jeans without trying on at least 4 pairs?)
Not all furniture is built the same, and a lot of different factors determine the quality and the price.

The Frame:
Look for a frame that is made from kiln-dried hardwood (poplar, ash, oak, or maple). The drying removes moisture from the wood, preventing warping and cracking over time. You find less expensive furniture frames are made of engineered wood, such as plywood or MDF (medium-density fibre board), don’t expect the piece to last as long.
You should also pay attention to how the frame is constructed. The joints and corners should be glued, double-doweled, and reinforced with blocking (longer sofas will have a center support to further stabilize the framework), for a strong, stable and reinforced frame.
The Foundation:
Constructions include steel spring configurations, which offer equal comfort and durability. In general, the number of springs and how they are reinforced determines cost and quality. Sit firmly on a side edge and listen for squeaks and creaks, which may suggest the springs are incorrectly placed or hitting the frame.
The Cushions:
Cushions are normally wrapped or crowned with polyester, low-density foam or other soft material for added comfort. Wrapping gives the cushion a soft look and helps prevent fabric from rubbing against the dense foam core and fills cushion corners.
Polyurethane foam seat cushions, containing high-density foam (2.0 pounds per cubic foot polymer density or greater) are desirable. They offer better support and durability than lower density foam seats. Back cushions do not need foam to be as dense, many use shredded foam (which is cheaper to use - but may eventually shift, compact and settle, getting lumpy and uneven looking).
Most importantly... Measure your Space
As important as it is to choose the proper shape, configuration and size depending on your room, it is most important to measure the path your new sofa is going to take as it comes through your front door, by looking at your entrance clearance, corners, halls, ceiling, light fixtures, stairways or elevators (if you’re in a condo, townhome or apartment). Measure: width, height, and diagonal width. A sofa should be at least 4 inches smaller than your passage measurements to ensure it will be able to be maneuvered into your home easily.
Don’t forget seat depth and sofa length if you like to throw your legs up, snooze, snuggle with your family or pets or grab your book or TV remote to settle in for a few hours of great relaxation!

What have we been doing lately?
The Chesterfield Shop showed a stunning white leather Home Theatre at The Toronto International Home Show at the Enercare Centre on March 10-14th, http://www.nationalhomeshow.com
This lovely woman fell fast asleep in the chair- you can’t buy this kind of “comfort” advertising!
Then it was on to The Cottage Life Show, April 1-3rd at the International Centre. http://shows.cottagelife.com/. We blew it away with a stunning display of two sofa sectional with chaises, one in a gorgeous cream fabric and the other in a deep blue velvet, and a pair of brown leather easy chairs with chrome detail.
They have been practically driving themselves up Highways 400, 26 and 11 on their own! The “look” is perfect and the comfort is unbelievable.

Notes from the Las Vegas World Market Center – January 24, 2016
The Las Vegas Furniture Market (LVFM) has come and gone, and it’s always a whirlwind of style and the latest designs trending from the west coast.
Under brilliant blue January Nevada skies, and temperatures cool enough to wear a jacket, the market didn’t disappoint. The three principal buildings were jam-packed with seating, lighting, tables, rugs, pillows, art and accessories, it was eye-candy at every turn, with the showroom spaces dressed up to entice buyers in.
Some highlights to report: multitudes of colour, from the still-trending blues to the ever-present neutrals – but they were highlighted by brilliant yellow, orange, teal and green accessories.
Showing prominently was lighting in both gold and silver.
Tables with reclaimed wood toppers- a very eclectic mix of old and new combinations.
Carpets have beautiful antiqued washed-out patterns, mostly in same-colour patinas with subtle background notes of textured tones.
Seating was the market star.
Lots of gorgeous leather sectionals with ratchet-back head-rests easily power-operated by a discreetly hidden button.
Contrast welting and beautiful stitching showed prominently in many of the showrooms.
Fabulous chairs with wood trim in mid-century modern styles.
Some final notes and observations: Seating has never been more exciting!
Tailored, contemporary, smart and clean.
Mid-Century modern and “soft” modern designs offer a distinctly fresh look, somehow of yesteryear, but with a scaled-down composition that is both current and on-trend with the mood of today.
Defined lines, wood, angles, great fabrics, leathers and velvets with contrasting pillows, nail heads and button tufting.

The International Fall Furniture Market – What’s New and Trending!
Just back from the furniture market…and there’s lots to report on!
Like clothing, furniture is fashion- and with each new season, the most wonderful designers pull out their architectural wands to introduce gorgeous new styles.
When it comes to seating, it’s all about scale.
This season, centimetres matter, legs are higher and an increased seat in both width and depth elevates comfort to a new level. Wood treatment is everywhere- and trending most noticeably on chairs and sofa rails.
Sumptuous velvets are everywhere, blues and greys continue to prove their endurance, with new introductions of teal, apple green and cobalt. Note the multi-size pillow treatment!
Navy blue, subtle stitching and metallic legs are everywhere!
Still going strong- everything is in “pairs”- why just have one, when you can have two?
Pairs of chairs of every design continue to be the big story, and ottomans and
lighting also make a playful pair.
Pillow treatment is fabulous- lots of colour and multi-shapes.
Statement-making is the new “flatter” bench ottoman in leather… with a button treatment.
Nail heads adorn as fashion jewellery.
Carpets are washed out and look gorgeously vintage.
Gold and rose-gold accessories are gorgeous- as in tables!

Some quick final notes…furniture fashion design has never been more exciting!
Clean lines, comfort and high style rule the day.
Manufacturers are introducing gel foam seating for maximum comfort.
Fresh new looks, lots of colour, fabulous scale and lots of accessorizing with nail heads, pillows, button tufting, velvets, and a whole spectrum of colour in leathers and fabrics. Anything goes!
